You will spend somewhere around a third of your whole life asleep. That's an enormous amount of time to spend doing nothing — which is a good clue that you aren't doing nothing.
Sleeping looks like being switched off. You lie still. You stop noticing things. Somebody could carry you to another room and you'd miss it.
But here's the thing evolution is very bad at tolerating: being useless. Lying unconscious for eight hours every night, unable to notice anything sneaking up on you, is a genuinely risky way to spend your time. Every animal with a brain does it anyway.
So it must be buying something. This episode is about what.
The first surprise is that "asleep" isn't a single state. Your brain moves through different kinds of sleep all night, in a loop that takes roughly 90 minutes to go round once. One trip round the loop is called a sleep cycle, and you do about four to six of them a night.

Deep sleep is the heavy kind — the sort where somebody has to shake you and you wake up confused about what year it is. Your brain waves go big and slow, which is why scientists also call it slow-wave sleep.
Dreaming sleep is almost the opposite. Your brain is nearly as busy as it is when you're awake, your eyes flick about behind your closed eyelids, and most of your vivid dreams happen here. Scientists call this one REM, which just stands for the eyes flicking: rapid eye movement.
The two kinds are not spread evenly through the night. Deep sleep is stacked at the beginning. Dreaming sleep piles up at the end.

Deep sleep looks after the body. This is when most of your growth hormone — the chemical signal that tells your body to build and repair — gets released, in pulses, mostly during those big early blocks. Repairing yesterday's wear and tear happens here.
Both kinds work on your memory. During sleep your brain replays things from the day and files the ones worth keeping. A skill you practised badly on Tuesday can genuinely feel smoother on Wednesday without you touching it in between — that improvement happened while you were asleep. Exactly which stage does which part of the filing is still being worked out by researchers, so don't let anyone tell you it's all settled.
There's also good evidence that sleep is when the brain does a kind of housekeeping, clearing out waste that builds up during the day. That one is newer science and a lot of it comes from studying animals rather than people, so it's fair to call it "strongly suspected" rather than "proved."
None of that can happen while you're awake. That's the answer to the puzzle we started with. Sleep is risky, and every animal does it anyway, because the jobs on that list have to be done somewhere — and there is no room for them in a working day.

Sleep scientists were asked this properly. A panel of thirteen of them reviewed the research and published a recommendation, which the big children's health organisations then agreed with:
Children aged 6 to 12 generally need between 9 and 12 hours of sleep in a day.
Notice it's a range, not a number. That's deliberate. Bodies genuinely differ, and one child needing ten and a half hours while their cousin does fine on nine and a half is completely ordinary — neither of them is doing it correctly or incorrectly.
The range gets shorter as you get older: teenagers land around 8 to 10, and adults around 7 to 9.
Two honest notes to finish on.
First, this isn't a test you pass or fail. It's a description of what bodies this age tend to need, and bedtime is a grown-up's job to sort out, not a nine-year-old's.
Second, if you're tired all day even after long nights, that's a thing to mention to a grown-up — not a thing to diagnose yourself with. Working out why a particular body is tired is a doctor's job, and even they need to see the person to do it.

Sleep runs in cycles of roughly 90 minutes (commonly given as 90-110), with about four to six per night. Slow-wave (deep) sleep is concentrated in the first hours and decreases across the night; REM periods start around 10 minutes and lengthen toward morning, reaching up to roughly an hour.
