File Your Notice Of Intent Before The Coffee Cools

The notice of intent has been scaring me all week for no real reason — set a timer, because this takes less time than a load of laundry.

File Your Notice Of Intent Before The Coffee Cools — A hand writing on a notebook at a desk.

It's the first of September, which around here means it's the week I keep meaning to file the notice of intent and instead find seventeen other things that suddenly feel more urgent. It's been on my list since August. It's a form. I know it's a form. And I have still managed to avoid it for two straight weeks, because something about "official state paperwork" makes my brain quietly file it under scary, even when the actual task underneath is nothing of the sort.

This year I finally sat down, set a timer more as a joke than a real strategy, and had the whole thing done before my coffee went cold. Not because the form got easier. Because I finally let myself look at what it actually asks for, instead of the version of it I'd been dreading in my head.

The version in my head involved legal language I'd have to decode, a form I might fill out wrong, some vague fear of getting a letter back saying I'd done it incorrectly. The actual form asked for names, ages, and an address. That's it. Every ounce of dread I'd been carrying for two weeks belonged to a form that doesn't exist.

I think this happens every fall because the notice of intent shows up at the exact moment everything else about starting the year already feels like a lot — new rhythms, new curriculum, new schedules to iron out — so one more official-sounding task gets to borrow all the anxiety already floating around the house, whether or not it's earned it.

What actually got me moving this year was knowing exactly what my state required before I opened the form, instead of digging through a government website at ten at night trying to translate legal phrasing into a plain-English checklist. The Homeschool Factory's compliance pages tell you precisely what your state wants and hand you the right form for it, so there's no guessing which of fifty-one different sets of rules actually applies to you.

Ten minutes, start to finish, once I stopped avoiding it. If yours is still sitting on your list too, this is your nudge: set a timer, open the form, and let it be done before your coffee cools. It was never the scary part of the year. It just felt that way because you hadn't looked at it yet.
